IS OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY WHAT I NEED?

Most people don’t know what occupational therapy is all about because of the obscure name of our profession. However, the word “occupation” in this context refers to all the tasks and activities you need to do in a day, and the roles you hold (daughter, partner, husband, employee, boss, parent etc). That means that occupational therapy is about helping you to do all the things you need, want and are expected to do. We are very goal focussed and will work with you on what you want to achieve. We also aim for independence where possible, so everything occupational therapists do is aimed at helping you to do your tasks & activities yourself, with or without equipment to help you.

In the context of hypermobility and rheumatological conditions, that means helping you to manage the day to day activities of your life in the best way possible while living with your condition. Michelle helps you to maximise your function & independence so that you can achieve as much as possible.

Maximising your function and independence means not only looking at your joints, but also your fatigue, pain levels, fine & gross motor skills. It also involves assessing the tasks you need to be able to do and helping you find ways around the challenges you face. OT’s are trained to analyse tasks and environments, as well as your skills and abilities and level the playing field between them so you can achieve your goals.

Michelle has extensive experience doing this work with people with hypermobility conditions, chronic pain, POTS and more recently has developed an interest in other rheumatological conditions. Michelle is the only occupational therapist in Australia known to work exclusively with adult patients with hypermobility & rheumatological conditions, having honed her skills and knowledge in this area in the last 10 years.

Michelle will look at:
  • your joints
  • your ability to move around the house
  • your ability to perform core functional tasks e.g. showering, dressing, cooking
  • talk about your fatigue levels
  • talk about your pain levels and pain management skills
  • talk about your social supports
  • discuss your emotional coping strategies
  • AND more!

So while appointments with Michelle are based on core occupational therapy theory & practice, the assessment process has been refined to look at the unique problem areas for individuals with hypermobility & other complex chronic conditions. Michelle knows that looking at your joints alone is not enough when there is so much more to living with a chronic condition.

APPOINTMENTS

FEES & REBATES

We offer online consultations to those outside of Sydney.

That includes all countries excluding USA & Canada. If you live in the USA or Canada & require a consult, please get in touch. We just need to tweak some things to make it possible!

Who are online appointments for?

Anyone with a hypermobility condition (or arthritis, a chronic condition, fibromyalgia) can benefit from an online assessment with Michelle. These sessions are for people who can’t get to see Michelle face-to-face in Sydney for a more traditional & in-depth appointment.

It’s for patients who are feeling lost, overwhelmed, confused and just not sure where to turn next. Michelle has significant experience working with adults with hypermobility & chronic conditions and knows that it’s one of the most common complaints – Where do I go? What do I next? Who is there to support me?

A big part of that answer is here. Michelle can provide professional guidance to help you manage your condition in the best way possible. From modifications to your environment, recommending aids, or changing the way you’re doing the task, to recommendations for other therapies, doctor suggestions, or finding additional supports. Together we can work out what you need.

Occupational therapy aims to help you achieve your goals, big or small. If you’re feeling like your hypermobility is impacting your life in ways that are causing you to struggle (physically, emotionally, spiritually), please consider an appointment to see if we can come up with some solutions or alternatives. Everyone deserves to live their life to their fullest potential, and Michelle would love to help you make that happen.

What does it cover?

  • Your current symptoms
  • Your current needs including what help you receive or what you might need
  • Your pain management strategies
  • We highlight 2-3 main problem areas to work on, incorporating your personal goals
  • We make a plan for where to from here
  • How are you going to meet those goals?
  • What do you need to make life better/easier/more functional?
  • What can we do to help you feel more confident, independent, happy?

We call this a big picture assessment because it gives us (you & Michelle) an overview of where you’re at and then adds direction to it.

This kind of appointment allows you to receive professional guidance and advice on where to next for YOU and to have personalised recommendations made to help you achieve your goals.

No referral necessary. Bookings online!

Note: These appointments cannot be claimed on Medicare or Private Health Funds, however NDIS funds may be used if eligible.

Please note we do not take bookings for children.
